Africa's Storage Import Crisis Is a Manufacturable Opportunity
South Africa imports virtually all of the battery cells it deploys. As the grid transitions from diesel back-up to utility-scale renewables, stationary storage demand is compounding — and with it, the country's exposure to foreign supply chains, currency swings and freight costs.
Our estimate puts the 2025 energy storage import bill at R45 billion. That is not just a balance-of-payments line item; it is a strategic dependency. It means the price of South Africa's energy transition is set in factories thousands of kilometres away, in currencies we do not control, on vessels we cannot prioritise.
The counter-argument is now well rehearsed: South Africa holds the world's largest manganese reserves, significant phosphates, regional zinc and graphite, deep-water port capacity, and an industrial skills base built over a century. Every input for cell manufacturing is either on the doorstep or one short haul away.
Manufacturing the cell locally does not merely substitute an import — it converts a recurring liability into an asset that compounds: minerals processed in-country, skills developed in-region, and a product that can be exported under US-AGOA and the AfCFTA.
